Importance of Corporate Social Media Guidelines

Social Media GuidelinesGreat Guidance in "Open Leadership" Book by @charleneli

I was invited in February to speak among my fellow peers and ISACA Puerto Rico Chapter Members on Social Media Guidelines. The local chapter wanted a subject that was refreshing and new and I got the privilege to present my ideas on the subject.

I belong to ISACA and hold personally two of their certifications CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor) and CGEIT (Corporate Governance in Enterprise IT). In many occasions my experiences working as IT Security Consultant & IT Auditor had made me think of many of the consequences that social media can have and the awareness of my peers in the profession.

I created many of these slides not reinventing the wheel to have business people understand some of the Hidden Risks Social Media has. At the moment I am working on some efforts for a Local Company related to Social Media in the discovery phase. For me it is difficult to keep all these things I spoke about in my February presentation out but in my opinion if I put them it will scare them away from entering into Social Media which I understand is the biggest risk of them all.

I have enclosed the presentation and would like your feedback on how to implement what is in my presentation together with all the benefits Social Media can bring.

Do you see any other Hidden Risks that are not included in the presentation?

One of the reasons I went over my presentation was the new ideas I have gotten by currently reading  Open Leadership: How Social Technology Can Transform the Way You Lead (J-B Warren Bennis Series) ( <-- Amazon Affiliate link) by @charleneli (Which I wrote about in my previous post "Social Media Relationships Land Me 2 Great Book"

Charlene's book gives great guidance on how to approach implementing Corporate Social Media Guidelines. Not only does she cover the technical aspects but also covers the strategy on how to adequately implement it to get buy in from management in all areas of the organization. Some of the Points that stood out for me in Chapter 5 (Structuring Openness With Sandbox Convenants) where the following:
  • Why Structure is Needed?
  • Using Covenants to Build Trust
  • Creating Social Media Guidelines
    • Setting the Stage (Includes a Social Media Guideline Checklist)
    • The Purpose
  • Best Practices on Setting Expectations
  • How to correct errors & transparency you should have in doing so.
  • Call For Shared Responsibility (The most Important point for me)

Although I had the privilege and benefit of getting Charlene Li's Book directly from her as an Advanced Copy I highly recommend people running, planning to engage in, or just thinking of Social Media Efforts to Grab the book once it is available May 24, 2010.

I have enclosed the following Amazon Affiliate links if you would like to order Charlene Li's books online.
