10 tricks for using Twitter

In order to find an effective and efficient way to use Twitter, here are 10 tips that may be useful for any Twitter user. Whether you’re new to Twitter or an experienced Twitter user these tips can help you get more results.

1. Use a tool for managing your tweets.

In today’s mobile world it’s easy to stay up to date with Twitter. With so many available applications to choose from such as: Tweetdeck or Hootsuite, and others can enhance the experience of Twitter.

2. Rotate links in your Tweets.

You should rotate where you place a link. Sometimes you should place it before the message which causes the user to see the link and then the message. This may increase the readers curiosity.  At other times you can place the link in the middle of the message. It is a good idea to alternate the structure of your “tweet” so they do not all look alike.

Example:

  • Before the message: “http://about.com – Portal to find useful and interesting information.”
  • After the message: “Portal to find useful and interesting: http://about.com”
  • Middle of the message: “Portal to find useful and interesting: http://about.com information.”

3. Create “tweets” with no more than 120 characters.

Tweets that are less than 120 character make it easier for others to “Re-tweet” and pass the information along.

4. Create lists to filter messages from users by topic, relationship, or events.

As the number of contacts you have grow, it becomes more and more difficult  to read through all of  your messages. Having lists allow you to better control the flow of messages and interaction with other users.

5. Understand how to use “hashtag” and its many features.

A “hashtag” is a keyword which is placed with a number sign (#) in front. This allows the Twitter platform to easily find users that  have used that keyword in their tweets.

6. Include a Background on Your Profile that identifies you, or the effort that you are running.

Twitter provides a generic background designs for its users, however, you have the ability to create your own background. This is very useful if your a business because it allows you to make your presence in Twitter stand out. Your background imagine can be as simple as just your logo, but I recommend having key features of your business on that background.

7. Complete your profile and highlight your interests so others with similar interests can see you as a potential contact to follow.

Be sure to keep up to date photo of you and information describing your interests. Creativity is always welcome.

8. Add links to your profile.

This will help to direct followers or visitors to your blog, or anywhere they can find more information from you. I always recommend to include your blog or website.

9. Share “tweets” from other users.

Twitter is a channel of communication whose purpose is to share information. Be sure to share and pass on information shared by others. If you only share what you create you miss the opportunity to create new relationships. Many users choose to stop following users when messages are often personal propaganda only.

10. Never click on links from strangers  they usually arrive via a special ”DM” (direct message).

Many people receive private messages which may have malicious code that can take over your account. Once you see suspicious activity call the Twitter security team they will show you how to precede.

When is the best time to send a “Tweet”?

The reason we want to use tools like Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus is to allow us to share our ideas in a public forum. We all want our content to be seen and some we care more about this than others.

A question I have heard many times is what time it is more practical to send a ”Tweet”. On the question seems simple, has a high degree of complexity to only answer in a sentence. There are several factors that can be used to understand what time it is more favorable to publish something. Or at what point is more likely to be seen.

To determine at what time or day you can try the following tips.

Use tools to measure and view statistics on how many people oppressed shared links. There acortadotes address cyber and tools such as bit.ly Hootsuite for reviewing reports on how the ecosystem reacted Twitter to link you shared.

Observe the times where most of your contacts or followers are connected and interacting online.

This way you can make an estimate of when it would be more favorable share something important, because you know beforehand the time is more likely that his followers see it.

You can also try using tools such as Tweetwhen. This tool checks your last 1,000 tweets and reports the time it has received more “Retweets” (A “Retweet” in English is when a user takes on Twitter content and shares it with his followers).

There are several tools that are able to improve the efficiency of how we communicate and interact on Twitter. But my advice to maintain a balance is determined by the time most convenient for you to share any information.

Make sure you project your personality through social profiles. It can be the difference for creating healthy relationships.

The Science of Timing

As I was browsing Slideshare today, I came acroos this neat presentation (above) by @danzarella. It analyzes the best time for you to engage on twitter based on his experience.

The neat part of the presentation is the tool. tweetwhen.com analyzes your Retweets. The application goes back 1,000 tweets and tells you at what time your posts have the most RT’s.

We analyzed @cimapr’s account and it demonstrated that the most RT’s were at 9am on Mondays. This is a good statistic to keep in mind when writing posts or imparting pertinent information for potential clients to read.

Like every tool, I recommend you use it with other sets of data and with full understanding of what needs to be accomplished. If you have any questions on these or any other tool feel free to contact us.

Broadcasting equals less Engagement

Many business accounts are constantly Broadcasting their sales, accomplishments, product features, company news, and anything they can find about themselves that appears to be interesting to them. When people broadcast a message it is mainly to attract the masses not focusing on quality. Something I have found through social media is that the more you broadcast the less interaction you get.

I have outlined the reasons why some twitter business users end up broadcasting and end up with little or no interactions.

Self-Promoting products, services, and company

Many twitter business users that are new to twitter create accounts and immediately start sending messages about there products, services, and other information relevant to company and interests. I have even seen a few that go after users and beg or harass them to follow them.

Most of these users also lack interaction with other users. On the other side they feel that everyone should learn about there company but they don’t take the time to learn about the others. They fail greatly in not looking for the interests of their community and clients.

Sharing Accomplishments

It is human nature to feel you need to be recognized for your accomplishments. A good example of people that want to be recognized are the so called Social Media Experts which share a collection of names such as Guru, Evangelist, Kings, and Queen. One of the terms still up for grabs is “Swami” for those of you who want to make the recommendation to these experts feel free to recommend it to them. They are constantly bragging that they have a certain klout score or have to announce how many followers they just gained. What they don’t realize is that other people take there perspective they really don’t care about how many followers you have they are to worried about their own.

Let other people share your accomplishments you will get better results. If you feel like sharing something find a polite way to share it but don’t bombard your users with your constant accomplishments.

Hoarding Followers

When I started using twitter I confused it with other social networks. I remember when I used ICQ in the late 90′s where my objective was trying to get in contact with as much people possible just to be able to keep multiple conversations all the time.

Twitter is a micro-blogging portal very different from others in social media. It is key that you earn your following and focus on quality of contacts. The more interested your followers are to your tweets the more probable is that they can be advocates of your message or thoughts (and maybe later on your company and services).

Always look for contacts that have things in common. Many people start adding people randomly in hopes to get someone to follow them back. Even if they follow you most people might not even read your tweets. By interacting with the people you have and really taking care of your audience you will start building a community that will be well worth waiting for your follower count to rise organically.

More Attention

There are no many ways to call attention to yourself. But something you need to keep in mind is that you can do it in a negative or a positive way. People that try to hard end up sharing a negative image. When you are using twitter and/or other social media platforms it should be with the purpose of establishing relationships. To increase the opportunities to establish those relationships you should do a great job at projecting a clean and positive image.

Monitoring Social Media To Sell More Food and/or Drinks (Part 1)

If we where restaurant owners at @cimapr we would easily find a way to monitor social media to sell more food and drinks.

I run social media efforts very lightly at @archipielagopr one of our clients in Ponce, PR and have collaborated with other restaurants in the metro San Juan area to assist them in using social media to increase restaurant revenues and brand recognition. With the little efforts we run we have been very successful in translating our efforts into revenues.

We became Re-sellers of the JitterJam application  which is focused on the mid- to small-business market companies who are looking to generate true Return On Investment from social, mobile and email engagement and marketing.

Here is how we picture and have used Jitterjam for one of our clients:

Discovering New Prospects. We are able to monitor conversations based on keywords, geolocation, and other factors that are relevant to our clients. By identifying people who have not decided what to eat or where, tourists that are looking for places to eat or have a drink. We monitor conversations based on keywords such as “Where can I eat in Ponce?” once we see this type of phrase we take at the user’s profile and identify the most inviting way to communicate with that person usually via twitter although it can be done via facebook also.

Creating Dialogue. by creating dialogue and offering sincere help we are able to grab attention from that prospect. We usually give them various quality options other than our clients restaurant, places of interest if they are tourist, and clear any other questions. If the prospect asks more questions like menu items or how to reserve we quickly send them links to the menu and online reservation system. In most occasions the prospect is so happy that we where so helpful that they end up making a reservation.

Develop Intelligence. No matter what tool you use either @jitterjam or doing it the hard way manually you should be monitoring the following:

  • What people are talking about near your geographical location?
  • What people are eating or drinking?
  • Mentions and sentiment around your competitors
  • Mentions and sentiment around your products and services.
  • What people want to eat and when?

Based on these factors you can improve your list of services and see how you can improve What’s On Your Menu?.

Buid Trust. By taking the @zappos attitude to helping out prospects and customers even when you are not able to make a direct sale you are able to establish great long term relationships. By using @jitterjam you can really focus on being helpful to your community which in the long term will result in an increase in business.

Market to Contacts. Once you are able to monitor people mentioning your brand, product and services it easier for you to directly contact them. If contacts are making positive mentions then you can also leverage those mentions and try to motivate that behavior throughout multiple platforms.

Measure learn and Grow. Measuring your efforts is key to see what is working and take a Stop, Start, and Continue attitude. Stop doing what is not working, Start doing new things that might be of interest to your audience, an continue doing what has worked so far. If you track twitter mentions, retweets, blog comments, facebook interactions, and other factors mentioning your brand you are able to see what works and what does not.

How else would you use a monitoring tool to Sell More Food or Drinks at a restaurant ?

We will be discussing in more detail the benefits of using a social media tool as strong as @jitterjam in our next post!

Video: Good Example on how to Promote Your Services by @ContactMe

On many ocassions I find corporate videos online that are not worth even hitting the play button.

That is why I was very happy with the simple but great video I  stumbled upon in a  tweet from @tedrubin that had a link to a great video.

Love it when a company has fun with product intros! Check out @contactme and their new video! http://su.pr/22NyoN

I agree with @tedrubin this is the way a company needs to make videos to make people understand its services.

5 Benefits of a LinkedIn Company Profile

Does your company have a LinkedIn company profile?

Just yesterday we established our company profile going in line with launching our new and refreshing image.

Linkedin Profile

I have been a LinkedIn user for  many years and by registering CIMA IT Solutions I quickly saw  benefits of having a Company LinkedIn Profile.

1. Accessibility

The company profile is accessible from each company employee’s individual profile.

So every employee a company has on LinkedIn will increase the reach and brand recognition of that company.

Linkedin Profile

2. Job Board

Each company profile has an area to post careers and/or jobs.

Instead of a company using a job board they can directly post on LinkedIn and it increases significantly the exposure to possible candidates.

Linkedin Profile

3. Validating actual employees

Many recruiters and companies take LinkedIn as a reliable source. Every company should keep an eye out on people posting relationships with them online.

The profile allows employees with your companies domain email to sign up. I am not sure how it works when the employee leaves but at least there is a filter for an employee to sign up.

Other features relating employees include:

  • Employee Directory
  • Communication of organizational changes such as promotions.

4. Another Channel to promote your business and create relationships.

Having a company profile in LinkedIn also acts as a beacon for possible leads and opportunities.

This can also serve as a main place to promote your services and products.

The profile also includes key company statistics and a quick overview of your company.

5. Conversations

Each profile also allows you to link a twitter account so Twitter conversations are posted on the profile. This can increase the amount of conversations and followers on twitter by cross-polinating contacts from LinkedIn to twitter.
